The recent bomb blasts in Hyderabad made me think as to how safe is it to live in India. So I thought it will be a good idea to compare crime statistics between India and USA.This comparision is especially important for desis in US like me who want to return back to their native country at some point of time. And here are the results (data from www.nationmaster.com) :
Total Number of Crimes (per 1000 people) in USA: 80
Total Number of Crimes (per 1000 people) in India: 1.6
Murders (per 1000 people) in USA: 0.043
Murders (per 1000 people) in India: 0.032
Rapes (per 1000 people) in USA: 0.3
Rapes (per 1000 people) in India: 0.014
Terrorism fatalities (per 1 million people) in last 40 years in USA: 10
Terrorism fatalities (per 1 million people) in last 40 years in India: 1.4
A vast number of crimes in India I think are not rreported. For example, I think large number of rapes and petty crimes like burglaries are not reported in India. But even after accounting for this fact, I think it is safe to conclude that living in India seems to be a safer option. Of course, when it comes to belief in police and judicary, USA fares much better than India.

Sir, Indian population is 4 times that of US and atleast 75 in 100 cases go unreported. Do the maths and u will think again.
Yes sir, I have done the maths. What is important is not the total number of crimes in a country, but the number of crimes per capita (or 1000 people), which is what i have reported. Reporting crimes on a per capita basis makes the population of the country immaterial.
I agree that 75 out of 100 crimes are not reported, but even that does not explain the fact that crimes are 50 times and rapes are 20 times more frequent in USA than in India.
When I first looked at the data, I myself didnt believe it. But so far I have not been able to come up with another explanation
Its unbelievable that the number of crimes in USA is of such higher magnitude than in India. Enlightening blog. Keep it up.
The so called "crime" definition varies from country to country. Plus your stats I know are Per 1000 people but the justification of low reporting in India still stands good. Because if only 25% people among 1000 report as compared to 100% in US, than the stats will be high for US. Also consider how many of those get proper justice from law in India. It take no time in US to resolve a crime related case whereas in India it takes forever. Another factor to consider is that even small mis-behaviors in US are considered crime, as oppose to in India crime only means something big, or people don't even report.
Anonymous,
As I mentioned before, rapes are 20 times more frequent in USA. You think only 5% of sexual abuses are reported in India? If yes, then your logic of under-reporting holds true. else not..
Also, lets say someone you hold dear is murdered or raped. What consoloation does it give if the perperator of the crime is punished? Getting justice makes sense if your house is burgled, but not if you have lost a dear one. Wont you rather live in a place where the probability of the crime happening is low, irrespective of whether you get justice or not?
